Lash Aftercare 101: How to Keep Your Extensions Looking Flawless

May 1, 2025

Eyelash extensions offer a glamorous, time-saving beauty boost, but they also require consistent care to maintain that fresh-from-the-salon look. Without proper maintenance, even high-quality extensions can shed prematurely or lose their shape. Whether someone is new to lashes or a seasoned lash lover, understanding aftercare is key to long-lasting results.

Below are essential tips to keep lash extensions looking full, fluffy, and flawless.

Avoid Water and Steam for the First 24-48 Hours

The most important period for lash extension care is the first one to two days after application. Moisture can interfere with the curing process of the lash adhesive, causing the extensions to lift or fall off prematurely. During this window, clients should avoid hot showers, steam rooms, saunas, and sweating heavily. Even standing over a boiling pot of water or using a steamy facial can compromise the bond. Once the adhesive has fully cured, normal activities can resume; but always with caution.

Clean Lashes Daily with the Right Products

Not cleaning the lashes allows oil, dirt, and debris to build up, weakening the adhesive and increasing the risk of infections like blepharitis. Use an oil-free, lash extension-safe cleanser paired with a soft brush to gently cleanse the lash line. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry—never rub—with a lint-free towel.

Brush Lashes Gently Every Day

Brushing once or twice daily with a clean spoolie helps keep them from crisscrossing or tangling. It's best to brush after cleansing or when lashes are dry to restore their shape. Avoid over-brushing or using too much pressure at the lash line, as this could damage the adhesive bond.

Be Mindful of Sleeping Positions

The way someone sleeps can have a surprising impact on lash longevity. Sleeping on the stomach or side puts pressure on the lashes, leading to early fallout or misshapen extensions. The best practice is to sleep on the back and use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction. Lash-friendly sleep masks that don’t press against the eyes can also help protect delicate extensions overnight.

Steer Clear of Mascara and Mechanical Curlers

One of the main benefits of lash extensions is that they eliminate the need for mascara. Applying mascara, especially waterproof varieties, can clump the extensions and make them harder to clean. Eyelash curlers are also off-limits, as they can weaken or snap the extensions. It is also good to opt for lash-safe mascara on the very tips and only on rare occasions.

Avoid Touching, Pulling, or Picking

It’s tempting to touch or tug at extensions, especially when they start to grow out. However, doing so can damage the natural lashes and result in uneven fallout. Picking at extensions can also increase the risk of infections and reduce retention. If lashes feel itchy or uncomfortable, it's better to gently cleanse or brush them instead of scratching.

Watch Out for Oil-Based Products

Oils are the enemy of lash adhesive. Skincare products, eye creams, cleansers, and makeup removers that contain oil can break down the lash glue and shorten retention time. Always check labels and choose oil-free, extension-safe products when applying anything near the eye area. Even sunscreen or foundation that migrates toward the eyes can affect lash retention.

Stay Consistent with Lash Fills

Natural lashes follow a growth cycle, shedding every six to eight weeks. As they fall out, so do the extensions attached to them. To maintain a full lash line, regular fills every 2 to 3 weeks are essential. Timely refills help avoid gaps and keep the set looking symmetrical. Delaying too long between fills can result in the need for a completely new set.
